The Re-Birth of a Brand - Dudley Beauty Corp, LLC
In September 2010, the Dudley brand turned 43 years young. Having been birthed in the tiny Greensboro kitchen of founders Drs. Joe and Eunice Dudley, the Dudley brand is one of the most successful African American owned hair care and cosmetics companies in the world. Though some companies might rest on those laurels, not so with the Dudley brand. Executives have initiated a “re-birth” of the brand building on its mission to provide quality plus hair care and beauty products, enrich people’s lives and help cosmetologists build their businesses, all while making the brand more contemporary and relevant in the highly competitive, billion-dollar beauty business. At the helm of the “re-birth” is Ursula Dudley Oglesby.
Oglesby is the middle child of Dudley brand founders Drs. Joe and Eunice Dudley. She is an innovative, smart, adept businesswoman and no stranger to the world of hair care and beauty products. She grew up in the company and has held numerous executive positions. Today she leads Dudley Beauty Corp, LLC.
As President of Dudley Beauty Corp, LLC, an international hair care and beauty products company, Oglesby oversees the sales, marketing and distribution of the entire catalog of Dudley’s professional and retail hair care products and cosmetics. Oglesby says, " For many years we have been blessed to have customers who support us, and for that we are grateful. As a community and business leader, the Dudley brand continues to be a vital part of the national and international beauty business.”
In this era of social networking media and the extremely competitive beauty business environment, Oglesby, a Harvard educated lawyer who counts President Barack Obama as one of her classmates, is bridging the gap between a historically solid brand of quality plus products and a new generation of savvy, style conscious textured-hair consumers.
According to global statistics, the women’s beauty industry is growing at a rate of approximately $202.254 billion USD every year, with the global market for cosmetics at $30.33 billion USD annually. This growth results from consumers growing awareness of their appearance and looks. There is massive potential for growth, but with that type of growth and opportunity, Oglesby observes, comes responsibility. Oglesby sees beauty as truly being more than skin deep. To her, beauty is about self-esteem and empowering people, women in particular, to excel in every area of their lives. It’s about using hair care and personal care cosmetics to enhance and not define.
In addition, the Dudley brand strongly believes in education. From expert training on product knowledge and usage to classes on color, cutting, styling, weaving and business development, Dudley Beauty Corp, LLC provides a variety of educational opportunities for professionals. Oglesby says the Dudley brand is still “influencing the Beauty Industry by distributing quality products that perform, and by creating educational opportunities for cosmetologists to learn and grow beyond their wildest dreams.” The influence of the Dudley brand was recently featured in entertainer Chris Rock’s movie “Good Hair” which premiered in October 2009. Rock took viewers on a sincere yet light-hearted exploration of the effects of the beauty industry within the African-American culture.
Oglesby and her team at Dudley Beauty Corp, LLC are implementing creative marketing strategies designed for growth and enhanced brand visibility and identification. According to Tanya Reid, Director of Marketing and Corporate Communications for Dudley Beauty Corp, it’s the “same exceptional products under new, innovative leadership.”
The Dudley brand of retail hair care products and cosmetics are not sold in stores, unlike the majority of their competitors, but are available only through licensed professionals, salons, independent distributors and Dudley’s website.
